Mac vs PC rant

In response to a debate I had I figured I would post my current thoughts apropos Macs and PCs

Apple software has an advantage over Microsoft in that it only has to be compatible with the hardware it was designed for. Use of Apple software on anything that wasn't designed for is not only not supported but expressly prohibited by Apple's EULAs.
Microsoft on the other hand, has the momentous challenge of having to be compatible with essentially everything in the free world; hardware and software.
This gives PC users WAY more choice in terms of cost, quality, self repair, part replacements, upgrades etc.
Apple has the end user by the nuts/ovaries when it comes to upgrades and repairs for hardware because the only source for Apple parts is Apple itself. As Apple only has to support a very limited selection of hardware, one would expect considerably higher reliability from their hardware - only there isn't. Not only that but generally, there is no upgrade path other than enlarging your storage. This means a few years after you purchase your Apple, it's completely out of date. Look at the 3.06 Ghz 24" iMac. When it was released with the Nvidia 8800 GS video card, the card was top shelf, couldn't be beat. Then a couple months later the title was lost. Since then it's changed a dozen times, yet you're still going to pay the same price for a 24" inch iMac today as you did when it came out a year ago. Not only that, but the card is integrated into the machine - so no swapping it with a more up to date one. If it breaks out of warranty, you'll be replacing it with obsolete technology at full price with nothing but a 90 day guarantee - and odds are it'll be refurbished ;)
I've repaired hundreds of PCs and while they do break frequently as well - they are cheaper to buy, cheaper to fix and cheaper to upgrade.
The problem with Windows isn't the hardware though (although there are a lot of shitty manufacturers) - it's the vulnerability to malware - something almost non-existant in the Apple world. MS can't do anything to fix it because it's vulnerability goes right down to the core of how Windows works. Fixing it means a complete overhaul and abandoning support and compatibility with all previous flavours of Windows. Not something the corporate world is going to tolerate...
At a consumer level, large manufacturers use cheap crappy parts in shiny boxes praying on people who don't know any better. I'm looking at you - big box computer store patrons - support your local custom computer store - you'll get a better computer at a better price with better service. These mass produced computers are the computers that fail - and Microsoft gets the blame.
We also can't forget either that 90% of computer users still don't know how to do more than turn on their computers. Try buying a car and never changing the oil or getting a tune-up. How long would it last?
Don't get me wrong, Windows has plenty of problems too, and I'm not a fan but there's more than meets the eye. Windows sill makes the world go 'round. Imagine going to work without it...
So if you want an innovative operating system like OS X, and the freedom to use any hardware you want, then it's time to download your favourite version of Linux! Just don't be surprised when Apple's family turns it's collective back on you and Bill Gates calls you a communist!
Incidentally, I'm working as a Mac technician right now and I have Mac, Windows and Linux machines at home. Windows because I'm most comfortable with it as a power user, Linux because it's the best, and Mac because, well, have you ever seen anything better that a Macbook when it comes to portable computers?

First Post

That's got to be the most uninspired title for a posting I could come up with.
Welcome to my latest blog... It is the 3rd one I've started, and like previous blogs of mine, won't be overly structured in terms of what I write about.
I'm recently married as well as recently re-located to Halifax Nova Scotia, so I'm sure a lot will relate to said topics as well as whatever else happens to interest me while I write.
Some topics will be intelligent, some not so much, and some will be ridiculous rants I'm sure...
